‘Creation – Re Creation’: Sydney Jewish Museum, 11-12 February 2024

Creation – Re-Creation is the theme for the 2024 Australian Association for Jewish Studies Conference, which will be held at the Sydney Jewish Museum on 11-12 February 2024. The conference committee invites submissions of abstracts that address all elements of the themes of Creation and Re-Creation – broadly defined – with reference to Judaism, Jewish History and Culture, and Jews.

Papers may explore, extend or challenge Jewish ideas of the Origin. Creation as an ongoing category of meaning, both divine and secular, has been fundamental to Jewish belief, thought and politics. Creation may hence be investigated through the various forms of human expression that seek to mirror Divine perfection, but also through protagonists of new ideas: material construction, or innovative contributions through scientific, political, artistic, philosophical, legal, and other fields.Re-Creation indicates a resumption of Creation after a period of stasis or change or may denote reinvention. This includes themes of Jewish Diaspora and phases of migration; or changes both individualised and of the Jewish people, such as during eras post-destruction, including the return of antisemitic tropes and the Holocaust. We encourage application by academic scholars and professional practitioners that explore the experiences of Jews from diverse backgrounds and from all areas of Jewish Studies and related fields including (but not limited to):Tanakh and Biblical StudiesAntisemitism, Holocaust and Genocide StudiesMemory StudiesJewish Cultural Studies, including the Visual Arts and LiteratureJewish Life and Jewish identityJewish EducationGender StudiesLiterary and Film StudiesIsrael and Diaspora StudiesMuseums, Architecture, and Arts Professionals

About Andreas Lehnertz

As Juniorprofessor of medieval history with a specialization in Jewish history at the University of Trier, Andreas Lehnertz studies the social, cultural, and religious history of Europe. His academic pursuits focus on the nuanced dynamics of everyday Christian-Jewish relations, the study of marginal Hebrew and Yiddish deeds, the study of Jewish and general sealing practices, and the in-depth study of Jewish craftspeople. He wrote a book on "Jewish Seals in the Medieval German Empire: The Authentication and Self-Representation of Jewish Men and Women". His expertise has been further honed through his roles as a postdoctoral fellow in the ERC project "Beyond the Elite - Jewish Daily Life in Medieval Europe" at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and as a member of the Martin Buber Society in the Humanities and Social Sciences, also at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. Currently he writes a book about "Jewish Craftspeople in Medieval Germany". Through his research and publications, he aims to make a meaningful contribution to the academic discourse surrounding medieval history and to provide valuable insights into the rich tapestry of European history during this pivotal period.
