The Department of Religious Studies at the University of Virginia invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in the study of Judaism, expected to begin August 25, 2024. We invite applications from scholars of Judaism with any methodological approach or geographical area of focus. We particularly, but not exclusively, encourage applications from scholars who engage with any of the following topics: ethnography of religion; lived religion; gender and sexuality; religion, race, and/or colonialism; religion, law, and secularism.
Candidates will be assessed in terms of their potential for excellence in research, teaching, and service for a department of Religious Studies in a public university. UVA is a flagship public institution committed to equitable access and an increasingly diverse student body. The successful candidate will be able to teach two courses a semester at the undergraduate and graduate levels; sustain an active research program with potential for international significance; and contribute to service in the department and the College of Arts & Sciences. The successful candidate will also demonstrate a record of professional collegiality and inclusive excellence and be able to take advantage of collaborative relationships with students and faculty in other programs across the College, including the Jewish Studies Program.
Qualifications
Applicants should have or expect to complete by August 2024 a PhD in a relevant field (required); have a promising record of publication, and an innovative research program. Candidates should demonstrate capacity and interest in teaching in two or more of the curricular concentrations of the Department of Religious Studies.
