Applications are invited for the position of Assistant Professor in Hebrew and the Jews of the Medieval Middle East in the Department of Middle Eastern Studies, University of Cambridge UK, starting on 1 September 2024.
The successful applicant will engage in high-level research and publish in their specialist field. They will deliver, to the highest standards, undergraduate teaching of pre-modern Hebrew language as well as undergraduate and post-graduate teaching on topics relating to pre-modern Hebrew, with a focus on the medieval literary and documentary sources in which ancient Hebrew traditions have been preserved and in which the various expressions of Judaism took shape.
The post-holder will be expected to contribute to the administration of the Middle Eastern Studies programme, offer supervisions (small-scale tutorials), and supervise research students at both the master’s and doctoral levels. From an undergraduate teaching perspective, the post-holder will be expected to engage in innovative and integrative course development, facilitating the offering of content papers to all students in the department and their borrowing by other faculties and departments.
We invite applicants in all the fields covered by the role description, with a primary focus on Ancient and Medieval Hebrew and a secondary focus on the languages, history and culture of the medieval Jews of the Islamic Middle East, particularly on Judaeo-Arabic. The successful candidate will hold a PhD in Hebrew Studies or a related discipline and will have a record of, or clear potential for, outstanding teaching and research. An outstanding command of pre-modern Hebrew is a prerequisite. Teaching experience is essential, as is an advanced proficiency in modern Hebrew.
