About Hannah Teddy Schachter

I am a historian of medieval Europe, examining the interactions between governance, gender, and Jewish life in Christian lands. My doctoral research at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem explored relations between the queens of France and the Jews in the thirteenth century. My current project examines Jewish life in the medieval Low Countries, some of whose principalities came under female rule at different times. More broadly, my work engages with the political structures of Ashkenazic regions, urban social life, and the strategies Jewish communities employed to navigate authority, secure belonging, and articulate their identities in pre-modern Europe.
