CFA: Short-Term Visiting Ph.D. or PostDoc Fellowships, Israel Science Foundation research project “Contending with Crises: The Jews in XIVth Century Europe,” Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Prof. Elisheva Baumgarten (PI)

The Israel Science Foundation sponsored research project Contending with Crises: The Jews in XIVth Century Europe at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem under the direction of Prof. Elisheva Baumgarten is offering short term (1-2 months) visiting fellowships for Ph.D. students in the fields of History, Jewish Studies, Religious Studies, Literature, or Art History and for Postdocs in these fields, starting in October 2024.

Successful candidates will receive a monthly stipend depending on their status (PhD or postdoc) as well as some travel funds if they come from abroad. They will be given offices at the Hebrew University (Mount Scopus campus), and will expected to be present at least two days a week during their period of fellowship. They will take part in a group enterprise of creating a history of Jewish life in Europe during the XIVth century with an emphasis on challenges Jews faced as part of the centuries’ crises including expulsion, migration, persecution, and plague but also return to previous homes after displacement, cultural production, changing and continuing social structures. Work on any geographic area in Europe is relevant for this project. They will participate in the project’s seminar, research trips, conferences and its other activities.

The required criteria for submitting candidacy for the scholarships are:
• Proven academic excellence;
• Sound knowledge in at least one of the following languages: Hebrew, Latin as well as one modern

research language (other than English).
• Disciplinary training in History, Religious Studies, Literature, Art History or Archaeology. • Sound knowledge of the history of medieval Europe.
• Candidacy is open to students who are writing or have completed their dissertation

Interested individuals are requested to send the following documents: • Curriculum vitae (including language proficiency )
• PhD Research Abstract (up to 500 words)
• Abstract of postdoc project (if relevant)

• Two letters of recommendation to be sent directly to the project’s coordinator. • A writing sample: dissertation chapter, MA thesis or a seminar paper.
• A cover letter explaining desire for visit

About Hannah Teddy Schachter

I am a PhD candidate in the Department of Jewish History at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and a Doctoral Fellow of the Israel Science Foundation-funded research group "Contending with Crises: Jews in Fourteenth-Century Europe" led by Prof. Elisheva Baumgarten. While my doctoral research explores the relationships between Jews and royal women--specifically queens--in 13th-century France, my other research projects consider Jewish-Christian encounters in medieval processions, dance and song, as well as costume in France and the German Kingdom during the Middle Ages.
