International conference on the occasion of the expulsion of the Jews from Cologne in 1424.

In October 1423, the Cologne City Council decided to expel Jews from Cologne with effect from October 1, 1424. Cologne thus joined a whole series of cities and territories in Europe that got rid of „their“ Jews.
The aim of this conference is to contextualize the expulsions of Jewish communities initiated by various protagonists within a pan-European framework and to examine them from different perspectives. What were the reasons for the expulsion? Who were the local protagonists and how did they proceed? How was the action against the Jews justified and legally protected? What similarities and differences can be identified? How did the Jewish communities react, and what were the consequences they had to face? Which traditions, cultures and identities went with them?
