Conference: »Jewish Delinquency« in Medieval Europe

Trier University, 8 – 10. September 2025

The conference aims to provide a survey of the various ways in which Jews were involved, or allegedly involved in criminal activities in medieval Europe. It provides a forum for discussing phenomena of »Jewish« delinquency in different towns, cities, regions, or from a kingdom-wide perspective, from short to long-term observations until c.1500 CE. Papers will focus on individual cases and explore their broader implications. The cases range from internal occurrences within the Jewish community to acts of »delinquency« committed by Jews against Christians. They will deal with how crimes (allegedly or not) committed by Jews were labeled, how the interpretation of certain modes of behavior as »delinquent« changed over time, or focus on certain types of (alleged) delinquency and the involvement of specific groups (Jewish women, young men, etc.) in crime.
