Call for Applications, Conferences

The Canadian Society for Jewish Studies (CSJS) is an academic society for the study of Jewish cultures, practices, and thought in any part of the world and any time period, from any disciplinary perspective. Participants and members from anywhere in the world are welcome. Paper proposals in all areas of Jewish Studies are invited. Approaches may be grounded in ethnography, history, textual study, hermeneutics, literary analysis, art history, critical theory, or any other scholarly approach. Papers may not have been published or presented elsewhere.

The 2023 conference is to take place in person at York University, Toronto, Canada, as part of the Congress of the Humanities and Social Sciences. We will also offer the opportunity to present papers by videoconferencing. We do not know yet if this will be during the conference, or in separate programming. If you would only be available online, mention it in your proposal.

A proposal, about 250 words, should clearly and concisely state the main argument of the paper, and indicate the type of methodology or research model, and how it will contribute to scholarship. Include a brief working bibliography. Proposals for pre-arranged panels with three presenters should add a brief statement about the theme of the panel and its significance. Papers may be presented, and proposals may be submitted, in English, French, Hebrew, or Yiddish.

Conference presenters must be CSJS members. An annual membership is CAN $36, CAN $18 for graduate students and faculty emeriti; for payment options see www.csjs.ca/membership. In addition, registration is required with the Congress of the Humanities and Social Sciences, and with the Association for Canadian Jewish Studies, which handles our participation in the Congress. A graduate student paper of high calibre presented at the conference will be given an award, accompanied by a cash prize. The award is granted based on the scholarly quality of the paper and its contribution to the field of Jewish Studies.

Proposals are due by Monday, January 9, 2023. All proposals should be sent by email, with the subject line CSJS Proposal, to JustinJaron.Lewis@umanitoba.ca. The email should include the presenter’s name and a brief bio including institutional affiliation and academic rank, if relevant. The proposal should be attached as a Word, Open Office, or PDF file. To facilitate anonymous peer review, the attachment should not include any identifying information.

About Andreas Lehnertz

As a Juniorprofessor of Medieval History specializing in Jewish History at Trier University, I delve into the intricate tapestry of social, cultural, and religious European history. My academic pursuits are centered around the nuanced dynamics of daily Christian-Jewish relations, the exploration of marginal Hebrew and Yiddish charter notes, the study of Jewish as well as general sealing practices, and the profound examination of Jewish craftspeople. I wrote a book about "Jewish Seals in the Medieval German Empire: The Authentication and Self-Representation of Jewish Men and Women" (in German). My expertise has been further honed through my roles as a postdoctoral fellow in the ERC project "Beyond the Elite – Jewish Daily Life in Medieval Europe" at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and as a member of the Martin Buber Society in the Humanities and Social Sciences, also at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. Currently, I am writing book that delves into the intriguing world of "Jewish Craftspeople in Medieval Ashkenaz." Through my research and publications, I aim to contribute meaningfully to the academic discourse surrounding medieval history, providing valuable insights into the rich tapestry of European history during this pivotal period.
