The Leo Baeck Institute for the Study of the History and Culture of German-speaking Jewry is inviting submissions for the 2024 Year Book Essay Prize. The Leo Baeck Institute Year Book is a fully refereed Oxford University Press journal and covers cultural, social, and economic history. A leading journal in the field, the Year Book has appeared annually since 1956.
- The Essay Prize is open to recent PhDs and Postdocs who have received their PhD no more than 5 years ago.
- Essays are to be no longer than 5,000 – 8,000 words, inclusive of all footnotes and references and should conform to LBI Year Book house style
- The submission must be accompanied by an abstract summarizing the principal arguments and making clear the relevance of the article to the competition topic.
- Permission must be obtained for the reproduction of illustrations and quotations from copyrighted material.
- All entries will be subject to The Leo Baeck Institute Year Book standards of refereeing and editorial review.
- Essays submitted for the Leo Baeck Essay Prize must not be under consideration for publication elsewhere.
- The winner of the Essay Prize will be obliged to verify his or her status as a recent PhD.
- It is a condition of entry that all entrants will be prepared to grant an exclusive license to the Year Book, which is operated on the journal’s behalf by the publisher if accepted for publication.
- The decision of the judges will be final, and no correspondence will be entered into by the editors.
- There is no runner-up prize, but the editors may publish any entries that are highly commended by the judges.
- In the unlikely event that, in the judges’ opinion, none of the essays submitted are of the required standard for the award of the prize, it will be offered for new entries the following year.
