Article: Hilferuf auf Hebräisch – Monumente April 2025 (in German)

An ordinary residential building in Schwäbisch Gmünd turns out to be a medieval synagogue and Jewish community center, a Domus Judaeorum. Probably the only surviving example of its kind in the German-speaking world: when Robert Dinser, a member of a long-established Gmünd family, bought the house at Imhofstraße 9 in 2014, he wanted to prevent the building from falling into the wrong hands. How far-sighted the owner of several monuments was in doing so would only become clear later. At first glance, the building with its hipped roof and 20th century porch looks like a normal residential building.

The Israel Science Foundation sponsored research project Contending with Crises: The Jews in XIVth Century Europe at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem under the direction of Prof. Elisheva Baumgarten is offering up to 2 visiting fellowships for Ph.D. students in the fields of History, Jewish Studies, Religious Studies, Literature, or Art History starting in October 2025. It is possible to apply for a full year or for part of one.
