Merchants’ Manuscript Culture in the Premodern World. Merchants and Their Agents in a Comparative Perspective

This call for papers for a conference in Hamburg (Cluster of Excellence: Understanding Written Artefacts) on 8/9 July 2022 has relevance for Jewish Studies as well.

Agents of merchants were (and still are) a common feature of trade all around the globe. They can be found everywhere and every time trade reached a certain level of complexity. In premodern times, Italian and French merchants sent their agents to outposts all across the Mediterranean, the Maghribi (or “Geniza”) merchants used representatives to manage trade in the Near-East, Spanish and Portuguese merchants were represented across the Atlantic, important trading hubs such as Ayutthaya and Malacca for trade in South-East Asia or Antwerp for trade in Central Europe were buzzing with merchants’ agents.

CFA: 10 Scholarships at the Bonn Center for Dependency and Slavery Studies, Universität Bonn

The Heinz Heinen Kolleg brings together excellent international scholars whose research focuses on different forms of strong asymmetrical dependency and slavery in all historical periods before the 20th century, and all cultural contexts. It is part of the Bonn Center for Dependency and Slavery Studies (BCDSS) that hosts the Cluster of Excellence “Beyond Slavery and Freedom. Asymmetric Dependencies in Pre-modern Societies” funded by the German Excellence Strategy.

The Heinz Heinen Kolleg is calling for applications for 10 scholarships:

  • two Junior Postdoctoral Fellows (max. 6 months after PhD) for up to 12 months;
  • two Postdoctoral Fellows (postdocs, assistant and associate professors) for up to 12 months;
  • two Senior Fellows (full professors) for up to 12 months;
  • two Doctoral Fellows (about to finish their PhD) for up to 6 months;
  • two Short Term Fellows for up to 2 months.

JOB: Director, Center for Jewish Studies, Eastern Michigan University

Eastern Michigan University seeks a visionary and inspiring leader to direct our Center for Jewish Studies.  While rank is open, we anticipate the successful candidate will have a record warranting a tenured appointment in one of the academic departments of the university.  The teaching load for this position is 1/1, which includes contributing courses to our existing minor in Jewish Studies. The Director works together with academic leaders in both the Provost’s Office and College of Arts and Sciences.  Owing to the Center’s interdisciplinary and community-linked mission, it is currently a part of the Provost’s Office.  The academic minor is housed in the College of Arts and Sciences.

JOB: Visiting Assistant Professor in Jewish Studies, University of Rochester

The Department of Religion and Classics at the University of Rochester invites applications for a full-time appointment as Visiting Assistant Professor in Jewish Studies. This is a one-year position (with the possibility of renewal for one additional year) anticipated to begin in August 2022. The teaching load is 3-3.

The successful applicant will be a Jewish Studies scholar, specializing in any aspect of Jewish history (with the exception of American and Hebrew Bible) who can contribute to both our “Religion/Politics/Society” and “Texts & Traditions” tracks. Ideally, this candidate’s areas of interest would include Judaism in Central or Western Europe and/or Holocaust Studies. In keeping with the University’s strategic planning, a specialization in Jewish Ethics would also be welcome.

CFP: 2022 Annual German Studies Conference, Israel: “Language, Culture, Society”

We invite scholars in fields related to German studies, including the humanities, social sciences, the arts, and Jewish studies to submit proposals for talks, panels, and workshops at the annual German Studies conference, which will be held on 9 June 2022. The venue is to be announced, contingent on COVID-19 conditions and regulations. Proposals for research related to contemporary or historical aspects of the German-speaking world, including from a comparative perspective, are welcome.

CFP: Judaica: Neue digitale Folge

Judaica: Neue digitale Folge (JNDF) is a peer-reviewed academic journal covering all areas of Jewish Studies from antiquity to modernity. It is the successor to Judaica. Beiträge zum Verstehen des Judentums (ed. by ZIID – Zurich Institute for Interreligious Dialogue), which was published in 74 volumes as a print version. Like its predecessor journal, it has a strong link to Jewish Studies at Swiss universities, and an international outlook—with authors and reviewers from all over the world. The editorial office is located at the Institute of Jewish Studies at the University of Bern. The new Judaica publishes articles in German, French and English. Besides articles, JNDF also publishes reviews.
