Rebekka Voß’s book “Sons of Saviors: The Red Jews in Yiddish Culture” has been awarded the Dorothy Rosenberg Prize on the History of the Jewish Diaspora

Prof. Dr. Rebekka Voß (Department of Jewish Studies at Goethe University Frankfurt) has been awarded the ‘Dorothy Rosenberg Prize in the History of the Jewish Diaspora’ for the year 2024! For her book “Sons of Saviors: The Red Jews in Yiddish Culture” (University of Pennsylvania Press, 2023). The prize honours the most outstanding scholarly work on the history of the Jewish Diaspora published in English in the previous calendar year.

Join this online event to honour and celebrate the legacy of Ilana Tahan, OBE—our much-loved colleague, and the international authority on Hebrew Manuscripts. As the Lead Curator for Hebrew and Christian Orient Collections, Ilana oversaw the British Library’s holdings of Armenian, Aramaic, Coptic, Hebrew, Samaritan, and Syriac manuscripts, and printed books. In this role, she was exceptionally active in reaching out to communities and scholars. She published many articles and chapters on the Hebrew collections, and undertook dozens of public workshops and presentations to bring the manuscripts closer to audiences. Ilana received her Officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (OBE) for services to scholarship in 2009.

Acording to their call, “the Faculty of Arts & Science at the University of Toronto invites applications for a full-time tenure stream position in Jewish Studies. The appointment will be at the rank of Assistant Professor, with an anticipated start date of July 1, 2025. The successful candidate will be appointed to a Faculty of Arts & Science Department depending on their field of expertise (51%), and the Anne Tanenbaum Centre for Jewish Studies (49%).”

The appointment will be at the rank of Assistant Professor, with an anticipated start date of July 1, 2025. The successful candidate will be appointed to a Faculty of Arts & Science Department depending on their field of expertise (51%), and the Anne Tanenbaum Centre for Jewish Studies (49%).

Candidates must have earned a PhD degree in Jewish Studies or a related area by the time of appointment, or shortly thereafter, with a demonstrated record of excellence in research and teaching. The search is particularly interested in candidates with a focus on Hebrew Literature and Culture, Jews of the Islamic World, North American Jewish Life, and Rabbinic literature.
