Post-Doctoral Fellowships in the Project “Contending with Crisis” at the Hebrew University Jerusalem

The Israel Science Foundation sponsored research project Contending with Crises: The Jews in XIVth Century Europe at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem under the direction of Prof. Elisheva Baumgarten is offering up to 1Post-Doctoral scholarships beginning in the 2025-2026 academic year. Scholars who have received their Ph.D. after October 1st 2020 or will submit their Ph.D. no later than October 1st 2025 are eligible to apply. It is possible to apply for a full year or for part of one.
The successful candidates will spend one academic year in Jerusalem (with a possibility of extension to two or more years). They will take part in a group enterprise of creating a history of Jewish life in Europe during the XIVth century with an emphasis on challenges Jews faced as part of the centuries’ crises including expulsion, migration, persecution and plague but also return to previous homes after displacement, cultural production, changing and continuing social structures. Work on any geographic area in Europe is relevant for this project. Fellows will receive a monthly stipend of up to 9,000 NIS and will be given offices at the Hebrew University (Mount Scopus campus). They will participate in the project’s seminar, research trips, conferences and its other activities and are expected to produce project-related article(s) and/or monograph. Fellows must be present in the office 3 full days a week and devote 100% of their time to the project and their research.

The required criteria for submitting candidacy for the fellowships are:

  • Proven academic excellence.
  • Knowledge of relevant research languages(Hebrew, Latin, as well Old French/Mittelhochdeutsch/modern
  • French/German/Italian/Spanish).
  • Sound knowledge of the history of medieval Europe.

  • A document describing the planned research program (up to 500 words)

Successful candidates will receive a monthly stipend of ca. 7,500 NIS. They will be given offices at the Hebrew University (Mount Scopus campus), and will expected to be present at least two days a week. They will take part in a group enterprise of creating a history of Jewish life in Europe during the XIVth century with an emphasis on challenges Jews faced as part of the centuries’ crises including expulsion, migration, persecution, and plague but also return to previous homes after displacement, cultural production, changing and continuing social
structures. Work on any geographic area in Europe is relevant for this project. They will participate in the project’s seminar, research trips, conferences and its other activities and will confirm to the requirements of Ph.D. students at the Hebrew University. The required criteria for submitting candidacy for the scholarships are:

  • Proven academic excellence;
  • Sound knowledge in at least one of the following languages: Hebrew, Latin as well as one modern research language (other than English).
  • Disciplinary training in History, Religious Studies, Literature, Art History or Archaeology.
  • Sound knowledge of the history of medieval Europe.
  • Candidacy is open to students registering for doctoral studies or to those who are writing their dissertation

Between Baghdad and Barcelona: Jewish Experiences in the Mediterranean

According to their call, “[t]he Department of Jewish Studies at the University of Vienna invites paper proposals for the 3rd Baron Young Scholars Workshop on May 27, 2025. […] This workshop welcomes papers examining Jewish life, its history, traditions and transformations in the Mediterranean world, from late antiquity to modern times.”

Workshop: The Book and the Library among the Jews of Islamic Lands, The Ben-Zvi Institute, Jerusalem

According to their call, they “invite researchers to submit proposals for presentations at a workshop which will focus on the topic of the book and the library in Jewish communities in Islamic lands and in their diasporas. The workshop will address manuscripts and printed works from the Middle Ages until the modern era. The workshop will address these topics among Jewish communities throughout the Islamicate world, Asia, Ethiopia, and Sephardic diasporas all over the world.”

The workshop will take place in Jerusalem, September 14–15, 2025.

Visiting Assistant Professor in Hebrew and Jewish Studies

The University of Kentucky invites applications for a Visiting Assistant Professor in Hebrew & Jewish Studies to begin August 1st, 2025. This is a full-time, non-tenure-eligible faculty position with an appointment of one year with the possibility of renewal for a second year. Candidates should be specialists in Jewish culture during any period between 500 B.C.E and 500 C.E. but applicants from other Jewish Studies backgrounds who can also teach in this area will be considered.

CFA: Samuel W. and Goldye Marian Spain Postdoctoral Associate in Jewish Studies, Rice University (Houston)

The Program in Jewish Studies at Rice University in Houston, Texas, invites applications for the Samuel W. and Goldye Marian Spain Postdoctoral Associate. The appointment will be for the academic year 2025–26 (July 1, 2025 through June 30, 2026), with renewal possible for a second year. Scholars from all fields of Jewish Studies will be considered, but we are especially interested in candidates whose scholarship relates to the study of antisemitism or to Israel studies.

Rothschild Foundation Hanadiv Europe: Jewish Heritage Seminar

According to their call, “[t]he Rothschild Foundation Hanadiv Europe is now accepting applications for their next Jewish Heritage Seminar, to be held 24th-29th of August 2025 in Amsterdam. The seminar is intended for early-career professionals in a Jewish heritage institution in Europe, with less than 7 years of experience, or recent or current graduate students in a European university working in the field of Jewish heritage or contemplating a career in this sector.”
